A new aid strategy for the developing countries written by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs For the last couple of years Poland has increasingly participated in the international development cooperation. Joining OECD Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in 1996 meant that Poland as a member of the developed countries community should take up development commitments. Becoming a EU member on 1 May 2004 implied further engagement on the part of Poland as a donor country in bringing overseas development aid to the countries in need. In the past years Poland has actively participated in all the international assemblies designed to discuss the issue of global development. Such as UN Millennium Summit held in 2000 in New York, UN Monterrey Conference in 2002 or the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, 2002 to mention just a few. At the same time last year events such as the Orange Revolution in Ukraine or the great South East Asia humanitarian disaster showed that Polish aid is needed and welcomed not only in neighboring countries but also overseas. Understanding the need to join the international group
of development aid donors Polish government ratified on 21 October a document
entitled "Polish Aid Strategy For Development". "Strategy"
is the first official document outlining the general direction of Polish
action in this area. It will enable the implementation of an effective
development system by the foreign affairs departments and Polish authorities
and allow for conducting a clear and transparent development policy. |
